Sing With Us

Chichester Singers

We Welcome New Members

ABOUT US

The Chichester Singers rehearse at Chichester High School weekly during school terms preparing for concerts in November, December or January, March and June.

Each term we look forward to welcoming new members to attend a few rehearsals before auditioning for a place in the choir.  In the audition we look for a good, but not necessarily trained, voice, reasonable sight-reading and plenty of enthusiasm for choral music.

Under the direction of Jonathan Willcocks The Chichester Singers aim for a high standard of performance and the focus of rehearsals is the interpretation of the music.  Regular rehearsal attendance is necessary and members are encouraged to take some time between rehearsals to familiarise themselves with the score.

Scores are ordered termly by the librarian and can be bought or hired by members.

If you are interested in finding out more or in joining the choir, please contact us.

Our Musical Director

We are privileged to have Jonathan Willcocks as our Musical Director. He is prominent internationally as a distinguished choral composer and conductor, whilst also showing great loyalty to the Chichester Singers over more than forty years.
In addition to his work with us, Jonathan is also Musical Director of Guildford Choral Society and the professional chamber orchestra Southern Pro Musica..

Our Accompanist

Sue currently accompanies us at The Chichester Singers, as well as West Sussex Youth Choir. She comes to us from musical director of Opera Brava, QC Chamber Choir, and two Anglican churches. She has also launched a dementia-friendly singing group called ‘Singing Memories.’

For many years we have enjoyed a close working relationship with Southern Pro Musica – one of the south’s leading professional orchestras – and the choir engages soloists of national and international reputation – including in the past such luminaries as Dame Janet Baker, Catherine Wyn-Rogers, Sir Willard White, Simon Keenleyside, Allan Clayton and James Oxley.

Social Events

The Chichester Singers value the more informal aspects of choral singing and each term we aim to make opportunities for members to get together. Sometimes this might be a drink and a mince pie after the last rehearsal of the Christmas term and we usually hold a summer party.

In addition every three years we take a three or four day trip to Europe, to perform a couple of concerts and to enjoy an interesting programme of tourist activities. Recent trips have been to Gerona in Spain and Lake Maggiore in Italy. In May 2022, after several postponments due to Covid, we were able to make our  trip to Cascais in Portugal.

Rehearsals

We rehearse from 7 – 9pm on Wednesday evenings during term time at the Chichester High School, Kingsham Road, PO19 8EB
